Daily Diary 30/03

Today I did my Contingency Plan and we're now in pre-production. It's a long while, but Pre-Production must be completed by the 20th of April (Thursday)

I feel confident about most of the issues in my contingency plan, the only thing I'm really worried about is the focus group. Sourcing people can be difficult and even then it's not guaranteed that their responses will be substantial, but I felt like doing a focus group would be the best way to get audience feedback for my articles and magazine. I'm aiming for at least four or five people for the focus group and plan to look at Facebook groups to find people

Doing work during Easter break worries me as I've noticed (especially during last years FMP) that I'm not as good at working by myself, I do better when I have my own space to work and my house is noisy due to my younger brothers. Knowing that there's a progress review during the break should help with this issue though as I'm aware my work will be checked during the break, which will help me get more done each day

Article Research

Research for Articles

I first wanted to start with the top 5 beauty products list. I wanted to stray away from perfumes as one of my adverts is already about that. I first looked at a few lists that existed already, starting with an article on Who What Wear. The first thing the article talks about is Augustinus Bader's The Rich Cream, which has been recommended from numerous beauty editors, celebrities and influencers. Its marketed as an all-in-one skinscare solution for "happy, healthy and glowing skin". The product is very rich though and the editor notes that it doesn't work with their oily skin, but there is a lightweight version more suited for oily skin with a serum-like texture

Looking at sites that sell the product, its main selling points are skin nourishment, healthy cell renewal, improving appearances (hyperpigmintation, aging) and acting as a shield against dry climates & free radicals (causes illness and aging). Its ideal for dry and mature skin and is best used for both the morning, evening and also as part of a night routine (onto cleansed and dry skin over the face, neck and décolleté - neckline)

On the company's site, its first presented as their "original award-winning daily moisturizer" and also came from 30 years of research and innovation. Its valued as £225 per 50ml. The page for it heavily focuses on its scientific benefits too, but I'm straying away from that since I'm not going to be writing about that too heavily

The Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick is also another product on the list with glowing reviews. Every beauty editor the editor of this article has talked to said that this blusher is the best one to ever come out. Its said to melt into skin quickly and make it healthy-looking, be foolproof and creamy. The editor also interviewed a makeup artist about the product, with her saying "All of Gucci Westman's products are amazing, but I choose the blushers above all others. They're not greasy or sheeny unlike so many others that rely on a lot of slip to disguise not so great colours. Gucci's got them bang on." One of the editors even mentioned finishing the entire product, with another editor being surprised since they've used it everyday since it came out in the UK and still haven't finished it

The blush is marketed similarly to how the article talks about it with research-led formulas and the product easily melting into skin. It also talks about the brand in general with how it uses plant-based actives and modern science to create its products. A phrase Cult Beauty uses to describe this product in particular is it being the "result of a skin care love affair between Gucci Westman (a world-renowned make up artist!)" and that it "offers fast, easy, flawless make up solutions for a simple, beautiful life" (which is an example for how I should be writing my articles and could be a tagline for me to use for this product). The product is also multipurpose and can be used for cheeks, lips and lids

The blush stick is easy-to-use and on-the-go-friendly. Its available in six shades: Petal, Chouchette, Dou Dou, Poppet, Minette and Bichette. On the website the article linked its £44 but on the company's website its only £35

4.jpg

The last one I wanted to look at in this article was Dior's Backstage Face & Body Flash Perfector Concealer. In the article the editor says that its great but hasn't garnered much attention since its launch, except by beauty editors who think its elite. Driver, one of the editors, says "It literally disappears into my skin with no cakey-ness, and it doesn't dry out or flake. I love the paint-brush applicator, too. Big fan." However there was an editor who mentioned finding the brush applicator a bit messy but still worth it and another said they prefer Dior's Forever Skin Correct instead. I felt like this would be good to include in the list as it seems unexpected

Its £27 and comes in multiple different shades. Its marketed as hiding dark circles, under eye bags, dullness, acne blemishes and giving the skin a natural glow. It lasts from morning until night while not creasing and its also waterproof. The product is designed to specifically match the Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundatio

I didn't want to get all of the products from one article, so I moved onto an article about the same topic on Vogue. The first product on the article that I decided to go with was Liis Rose Struck Eau De Parfum. It is a fragrance with a fresh and citrusy rose scent, noted as "a cool, refreshing take on a floral fragrance" due to the blend of earthy matcha tea and bright cassis & tangerine. The idea for the product came from a rose blossom encased in ice. The editors note on Violet Grey describes the product as "Refreshing and soft, it evokes walking into a dew-soaked rose garden." On the official company's website the perfume is mentioned as "Roses Restless for Spring" and is genderless. The perfume blends into the skin easily and lasts longer on hydrated skin. It should be reapplied every three to four hours

4.jpg

The last product I'll be looking at is Gisou's Honey Infused Hair Oil. On the official website it says that the product includes Mirsalehi Honey from the company's own Mirsalehi Bee Garden. The hair oil makes hair healthy, soft and stronger all while maintaining a silky shine. Its multipurpose and can be used for pre-styling, finishing a hair mask or for overnight treatment. It can also be used to repair hair and Cult Beauty distinctly says "Oh, and did we mention just how chic the glass bottle will looking sitting pretty in your hair care collection?"

I then moved onto doing research for holiday recommendations. I wasn't completely sure how I wanted this article to be formatted at first, but after thinking about it I decided I'd rather focus on just one location since I only have one page for this. I looked at an article on The Sundays Times to find a holiday and decided to go with The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, partly because the article says the holiday also works as a luxury family adventure which caters to my audience being older. It's a private island with three tropical areas. It has five restaurants and bars, a spa with multiple treatment rooms, a kids club and tennis courts. There's also the nearby Fari Marina Village with a beach club, live music, designer stores and more dining options

I then went on the official site for the area. The hotel is minimalist but still has many things to enjoy on your own or with the whole family. Two of the restaurants in the hotel are an Asian food trailer and a Lebanese grill. The Ritz-Carlton Spa is nearby and there's also the Ritz Kids Club that houses playgrounds, napping pods and a kids' pool. The Fari Marina Village has opportunities for shopping, dining and entertainment. There's also a dive center, a 24-hour fitness center, photography studio and the Art Collection as well

There are 8 different villas (3 of them being two bedrooms) with different perks, some like the Ocean Pool villa and Lagoon Pool villa have clear views of the waters nearby and an integrated pool & sundeck. There's also The Ritz-Carlton Estate with a private beach, outdoor pool, spa room, full kitchen and even a dedicated butler and buggy

Each of the nine spa suites have a relaxation lounge, salon and a boutique. The spa suite features an organic body & skincare collection by Bamford. There's treatments such as Bamford Signature Journey, Bamboo Massage and the Maldivian Signature Rejuvenation. Its open 9am-9pm

Other things to do include kayaking, snorkeling, volleyball and tennis courts. For younger guests they have their own space in Ritz Kids where they can play video games or go into the private outdoor pool. Fari Marina Village also has luxury shopping, fine dining and workshops about arts, culture and local crafts

There are also special events for Easter & Eid.  For Easter there's Easter egg painting, the chocolate bean-to-bar-masterclass where you learn chocolate-making, an Easter gala dinner and the Easter egg hunt & parade. For Eid there's the Souk, belly dancing workshop, the Kasabu workshop where you learn about art featuring 'Kasabu Gethun' and a Bedouin barbecue

My other article was going to be about maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Originally this was planned to help younger people cope with climbing the corporate ladder while still making time for life and social engagements, but I felt like this section could really help anyone which is why I'm keeping it. The first website I went on was the Mental Health Foundation

For starters, a healthy work-life balance can vary from person to person. Its not about halving your time between work and life but rather feeling content about both parts of your life. A few of the examples of a healthy balance is: meeting work deadlines while still having time for friends and hobbies, having time to sleep properly and eat well and not constantly worrying about work while at home. It can become harder to maintain this if you have other caring responsibilites or health difficulties

Its easy to normalise working long hours or being under extreme stress if its occurred for too long, which is why its good to step back every now and then. Sometimes its hard to change how you work, for example if you're on a zero-hours contract then it might be difficult to stop working long hours as you may not earn enough money to live. However, for those who still can, research (work-life balance is a cycle, not an achievement) suggests regularly checking your balance and following these five steps:

The first step is to pause. A few questions to ask are: what's causing you stress or unhappiness? How is that affecting my work and personal life? What am I prioritising? What am I losing out on? Most people only reflect on work when there's a major life event such as a birth or loss of someone, but thinking about your priorities is a major step towards maintaining a work-life balance

The second step is to pay attention to your feelings. Now that you've paused and thought about it, how does it make you feel? Do you feel fulfilled or resentful? After being aware of how you feel you can make informed decisions about the changes you need to make

The third step is to think about what needs to change. Is working longer hours worth not spending time with your family? Is working weekends worth having less time for your social life?

The fourth step is to consider alternatives to your current situation. This varies depending on what the issue is, but what can you do or change so it works within your new priorities?

The fifth step is to finally make the changes. For some that can be asking for more flexible hours and others it can be using your annual leave

It can still be difficult to stand up for yourself at work, especially if you're worried about losing your job. However a few tips the site gives are:

  • Understanding your rights at work such as knowing your contracts, working hours, sick pay and parental leave. A site linked to help with this is Citizens Advice. If you have a disability (mental and physical conditions included), your employer may have to make reasonable adjustments

  • Its important to speak up if you feel like your dem
ands of work are too much. Its also good to take proper breaks during work. Half an hour for lunch and getting out of the workplace are great ideas. Workers are legally entitled to have specific breaks during the day

  • Drawing a line between work and home is crucial as well. If you work from home then its a good idea to keep up a routine, make a dedicated workspace and switch off when work for the day is finished. NHS has tips on working from home specifically

  • Work related stress seriously affects mental health. A few ways to reduce this is through exercise, eating well and supportive friendships

  • If you feel like work gets in the way of spending time with your partner or friends, then a few things you can do are: schedule time together, get help with chores & childcare and making every second count if you still don't have enough spare time

  • Its better to keep track of working hours over weeks or months rather than days as it gives you a broader and better view of your work-life balance. If you can then its a good idea to assess your balance with your colleagues and management staff

  • Work smarter, not longer. This means prioritising and helps with not getting caught up in less productive activities

I felt like the website was really detailed and expansive already, so I moved onto the final topic of promoting luxury businesses owned by black women. Similarly to the holiday article, I wasn't sure whether to focus on multiple people or just one person. For now I've decided to just do research on three brands. I first found Danessa Myricks Beauty which focuses on makeup and skincare. One of their blurring balm's went viral on TikTok. Going on the official site's about page, it talks more about Danessa herself. She's a self-taught makeup artist, photographer, entrepreneur, founder and mother

She started out as a self-taught makeup artist and used products in unconventional ways. She taught other artists her techniques and products selections and lead product development for "some of the most successful launches in history" for brands such as KISS and Benefit Cosmetics. Eventually she moved onto making her own brand

Her products are designed to be multi-functional and work in multiple places for multiple faces. For her the most rewarding part of her work is getting feedback from people who felt underrepresented and ignored by beauty brands. She's done make up for celebrities and worked with music and film entertainers previously. She currently trains makeup artists and enthusiasts

The brand was founded on the principle that any race, gender, age and personal style should feel included when experimenting with make up. The result is making makeup artists and consumers feel free to "play outside the box" when it comes to makeup

The next brand I focused on was Pattern Beauty, a brand focused on curly, coil and kinky hair. The brand was founded by Tracee Ellis Ross, who's actually an actress known for her lead roles in shows like Girlfriends and Black-ish. The about page on Pattern isn't as detailed as the previous one, mainly only going over the brand's goals. The brand specialises in healthy hair and many different hair textures. The page has a quote from the founder, "I wanted to create a line of products that gave our hair the support it needed to be its true self.”

The last brand I looked into was Ebi (which means family in Yoruba), a brand that mainly sells wellness essentials. Fittingly enough the brand's primary target audience are new mothers. On the official sites about page, the brand states that they want to support healthy postpartum experiences with self-care products. They also want to provide balance for mothers before and during pregnancy as well. The line of products are plant-based and they only source organic ingredients, with the bulk of their ingredients from small family farms in the Northeast

Breighl Robbins created Ebi once she realised there wasn't a wellness line dedicated specifically for new mothers. She has an academic background in public health and has previously worked in integrative medicine. She is also a mother herself

There's an interview with her from Bluemercury. She uses all of her products but uses The Oil the most as its multipurpose (she uses it for her and her daughter's hair, skin cleansing, as a nightly serum and for bathing). One of the questions she's asked is what advice she'd give for someone thinking about starting their own business, she says "Balance is key. You can’t do your best work, if you’re not showing up as your best self. Invest time in yourself. That’s a part of your business, too."

Later on in pre-production I decided to replace my article on Tubman with an article on spring hairstyles instead. Ever since I thought more about the magazine's branding, I realised the article topic didn't fit that well into a luxury magazine. I was originally planning to replace it with an article on spring fashion instead but I felt that hairstyles would relate more closely to the target audience. I found a video on hairstyles for spring below that I watched

The first trend the video talks about is a style that has brown hair at the back and blonde at the front, calling it "honey-styled". There's another style called money piece shown that can help to soften and brighten someone's complexion, its called the money pice because its cost-effective and easy to maintain. The first hairstyle shown are passion twists, this season they're being worn at mermaid-length (very long). The presenter in the video mentions red being a popular colour this year and long sideburns being very trendy

The video isn't very informative though so I decided to stop watching and just go with my article being about passion twists and also mentioning a few popular trends (long sideburns & red highlights/colours). Since I knew what style of hair I wanted to feature, I wanted to quickly look at passion twist hairstyles

The article on The Right Hairstyles also features a quick history lesson on the style. It was created by Kailyn Rogers, a Miami-based hairstylist, in 2018. At the time she wanted a natural looking and easy to maintain style that was also elegant and glamorous. Passion twists are curly and silky which makes them different from faux locks, this is achieved with water wave braiding hair

The first hairstyle mentioned are black shoulder length passion twists. At shoulder length passion twists can become a natural protective hairstyle. The second are black & brown ombre passion twists, the colour combination is always popular and flattering especially on darker skin. Ombre adds colour while avoiding the issue of being too dramatic. Short passion twists are seen as very natural looking and have great bounce while also being quick and cheap to install. The last one I wanted to look at were passion twists with accessories such as beads, shells or cuffs. Accessories can be used to add colour and shine to hair while also drawing attention to someones face by framing it

Doing research for my articles will help me for when I actually have to write them. While I was doing this research I've also decided I'll be focusing on only one holiday as I only have one page for the article and I felt like it'd be easier to design a page about a singular place. I'm still not completely sure whether I'll write about two black owned businesses or just one yet (I decided Pattern didn't have enough for me to really write anything substantial on it). Looking back on my research I think its fine, my only worry is that I'm focusing too much on skincare products rather than having fashion be a part of my magazine. I may go back and do research on a black owned fashion brand instead as I don't want all my pages to look too similar

Daily Diary 05/04

Today I worked on researching luxury products for one of my articles

I'm dedicating the rest of this week to researching for one article a day at least, since I only have 4 topics left I should be able to do them all this week. I know that in my contingency plan I was going to finish all of my pre-production documents this week as well but the articles are taking longer than I expected

Daily Diary 06/04

Today I worked on researching for the travel article that'll be in my magazine

It's a little hard to come up with what to say since these diaries are daily and I'm only doing research everyday. I'm planning the hairstyles article to be short for the most part so I should be able to do that and another article topic in the same day

I contacted a few luxury magazine designers on Behance and a few other websites like PeoplePerHour. I wanted to avoid Fiverr specifically since I'd have to contact them from DM's, which would imply I want to pay for their services (this happened during the specialist unit with one of the people I contacted through that site). I contacted In The Pool Studio, Paul Scotton, SO Creative and Joan Designs

Daily Diary 07/04

Today I did research on tips on how to manage a healthy work-life balance

This one took a bit longer than usual since the source I used for this was quite long. It feels a bit ironic to have to do research on this considering I'm not sure if I actually have a healthy work-life balance, everyday I wake up I keep thinking about how I need to do more work on this despite me usually working at night

I looked at a few Facebook groups for Black women who like luxury products on Monday (03/04) but so far I've not heard any responses still. All of the groups except one are invite-only so I had to send a request to them each individually. I'm unsure if I'll be able to get into any of them still so I should try to find alternatives

Daily Diary 08/04

Today I finished researching the rest of my articles. I will push doing pre-production documents to next week since I still have a lot of time to do so. I don't imagine they'll take that long, while there are a lot of them the majority of them are short

I was able to finish both research on Black owned businesses and hairstyles since, as I expected, doing research on hairstyles didn't take that much time. I'm taking a break tomorrow since I think it'd benefit me to do so after reflecting back on yesterday's diary

Colour Swatches

Colour Swatches

For colour swatches I've decided to stick with what I used for my pitch as that's what I was planning to do. Most luxury print magazines mainly only use black or white or use a colour that's in an image, so I don't imagine I'll be using the purple accent colour (#BE9FD1) much in the actual magazine

I added this colour onto my swatches while doing my mock up, but I mainly used it for filler boxes that actual images will replace later. I also used it for the Black owned businesses page to work as a background but I'm unsure if I like it. I plan to use this accent colour more though during production, possibly making the page numbers the accent colour or adding a design element that uses the colour

Storyboard

Storyboard for Photoshoot

I did this storyboard so I know what I want the portraits to look like for my photoshoot. Because of this, I know I want them to be portraits

Lighting Plan

lighting plan.png
Lighting Plan

I made this lighting plan so that I know where I want the lights to be in the studio. I mainly based this off of three-point lighting as I felt it'd be the most suitable lighting for a portrait. The key light highlights their face and the back light is so there's no shadows in the picture, especially getting rid of them in post is difficult

Hazard Form

Hazard Form
Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

Doing a hazard form and risk assessment is always essential when handling equipment which is why I did them for my photoshoot. Because of this I now know the potential dangers and risks that might appear while I'm doing my photoshoot

Talent Release

Talent Release

Daily Diary 11/04

Today I did all of the documents needed for the photoshoot in one go and finished the interview questions for Akua & Gabrielle. I'll be going to the Bute Street Film Festival next Friday

So far I'm on pace for everything. I was able to get accepted into one of the Facebook groups for Black women in luxury and I did detail what I was joining for (in the invite you have to answer some questions pertaining to the rules of each group, in the last section I put that I was there to get feedback for my magazine) so I have a focus group confirmed for production now

Magazine Branding

Before making my font justification & design brief, I wanted to settle on the magazine's brand. I made this its own section as I feel like its important to state what the brand is before doing those documents, as knowing what the brand is will inform the decisions I make for both of them

First of all I wanted to get the name out of the way. Adroitly was its original name but after receiving my pitch feedback I realised it doesn't work and I should change it. I've already done research for magazine brand names but I'll list a few luxury magazine brands to help me

  • Vanity Fair

  • Jetset

  • Harper's Bazaar

  • Conde Nast's Traveller

  • How To Spend It

  • The Contour of Luxury

  • Town & Country

  • Coveted

  • Prestige

  • Elite Traveller

  • Melan

  • NewAfricanWoman

I wanted to have it be one or two words. My favourite out of this list is Melan as you're able to tell that the magazine is for and about black people, you can also do the same with NewAfricanWoman but I don't want my magazine's brand to be that long. These were a few ideas I came up with:

  • Afro Elite

  • Class

Since the target audience will be older, I'll be switching my primary target audience to be more similar to my original secondary audience. This means the USP (original being a luxury magazine focused on young people 'climbing up the job ladder') will have to change to be a luxury magazine focused on older black women, which would make it more similar to Melan. I don't think this is too much of an issue though as from what I can find, there are only two magazines that really fill in that niche audience (Melan & NewAfricanWoman)

Daily Diary 13/04

Today I finalised my magazine branding and completed my design brief. I'll be going to the Bute Street Film Festival tomorrow

I procrastinated a bit on the design brief purely because I wasn't completely sure on the magazine branding yet. Now that I am I was able to do it and I feel more confident in the brand itself, especially considering prior to this the magazine didn't have a name... Mainly because I was a bit stuck on any good names for awhile, I wanted it to be something memorable but quick and to the point. So far from the short list I made I think Black Lux and Afro Elite are the better two, I just need to pick one to stick with

So far I'm mostly on track with my schedule except from the article drafts. I should've done the drafts for them already, but looking back on my schedule I think I still have time to do it next week since that week only has the mock ups left and I don't think I need an entire week on that. Week 1's schedule was very bloated so I think its okay that I spaced it out a bit more (week 1 was meant to be dedicated to research for my articles, sourcing people and finishing all of my pre-production documents). I still have a few pre-production documents I need to do but they really shouldn't take that much time and I can do them at home after focusing on the mock ups in college

I got a response from Paul Scotton today so I at least have one magazine designer to get feedback from during production

Copywriting Framework

Copywriting Framework

Daily Diary 18/04

Today I worked on my copywriting framework and tried to start writing my article drafts. I also had a practical on studio lighting and shooting on a white background

I had technically already finished my copywriting framework yesterday, but I wanted to add onto it since I felt that it was very barebones still. It took a bit more time than I expected it to, but overall I'm very happy that I did as it got me to re-evaluate my target audience for the better and I was able to go into much more detail. I wrote it in a way that the notes would still be semi-short as that's how I personally like my notes

As mentioned before, I tried to write my articles but barely got a good sentence down. It's actually a lot more difficult to write this than I was expecting, I've always enjoyed reading descriptive text (poetry, books, etc.) but I've never been good at actually writing any of that despite trying to do it previously. I was expecting to already be done with the articles after today so I'm a little worried, especially since this is still my draft. I hope to be done with it by the end of this week at least

For the practical it went mostly fine. I learnt what I needed to but while taking pictures I realised that I'd need to adjust the lighting a bit. For context I was doing this practical with two other people and I was the only dark skinned person there, I felt like photos of them were lit well while mine could've been a bit better (although that might just be a bit of bias since its common to not like looking at photos of yourself really). I'll have to look into it a bit since I know lighting for dark skinned people can work a bit differently

Font Justification

Font Justification

Its important that I do font justification as It'll be much easier for me in production if I already know what fonts I want to use. I think the font justification could be better since I didn't completely decide on some fonts, but for now it gives me a good start and selection of fonts I could work with

Daily Diary 19/04

Today I wrote one of my articles and made notes for the rest of them. I'll also be doing my font justification when I get home, tomorrow I want to focus only on my mock ups

Despite spending the entire day on it, I've only been able to complete one article. It took me a lot of time to write it because I find descriptive writing extremely difficult. I've always wanted to write the same way they do in luxury magazines and I've tried previously in the past multiple times, but I've never been able to truly capture it. Its honestly frustrating to try and write any of the articles because of this and I'm not really looking forward to it, especially since (with the speed I'm going currently) I don't even have enough time to write the drafts for all of them

My font justification is fine but I found it difficult to talk about the fonts when the overwhelming majority of them are so similar. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing that they are (if anything its brand consistency, which is a good thing) but it did make it harder to write for

text tool

I used the text tool to add text, I did this by selecting the T icon in the left toolbar and clicking and dragging it to open a textbox. I changed fonts by selecting the text and clicking on the box directly under Character in the Properties tab, I also changed the size of the text by clicking the number next to the 'tT' icon that's also in the same section

Daily Diary 20/04

Today I focused only on my mockups as I can do the rest of my pre-production at home (budget breakdown, articles, interview questions)

I'm going to be replacing the article about Harriet Tubman as, while I get what I was going for with it, I don't feel like it fits for a luxury magazine at all. I'll be replacing it with an article about fashion, which solves two of the main issues I had about the article topics in one go (how its odd that fashion isn't talked about in the magazine and feeling like the article on Harriet Tubman was extremely out of place)

While planning out where my pages were going to go I realised I did research on more article topics than I actually had space for. I was working on the plan I originally made on Daily Diary 09/03, which was before I was planning to interview three people. I feel like it'd be better for me to just add two pages so I did that instead of cutting out content. Below is the new list I'm going with

Mock Up Feedback

feedback1.png

I've currently gotten feedback from one of the magazine designers I've contacted

All of my articles only have a singular page so to compensate for this I wrote the articles with less text, my FMP last year had too much text in a font that was too big which made it harder to design around. By default when exporting a high quality PDF in InDesign it doesn't include the bleed, but I moved the footer regardless so it'd not be as close to the bottom. He also mentioned making the fonts 80% blach which made me realise I used the default black in InDesign, which isn't actually pure black. When I get the chance to I'll change it back to #000 black like I intended. I didn't intend for hyphenate to be on when I was designing my actual magazine so I appreciate the reminder to turn it off

He also included a PDF for an entire luxury magazine which I've briefly looked at, I plan to have it up while I design the magazine next time so I'll be able to have inspiration. It also helps as I'll be able to compare my magazine to a professional one, specifically a luxury one

Budget Breakdown

Budget Breakdown

The main reason I made this budget breakdown is so I'd know how much I'd need for this project overall. I'll only be paying for the magazine so thats the main concern for me. This doesn't include anything I might pay for to help me design the magazine (like buying other magazines for example) and only includes the bare minimum

Daily Diary 25/04

Today I finished my pre-production work (articles & budget), I also called the printers for my budget breakdown. Tomorrow I'll be doing the photoshoot and my second interview with Tasha Case at 11am-1pm. I have all of the responses needed for my interview now other than the interview I'll be doing tomorrow

I called the printers so I'd know how much the magazine costs, but I also found out a few things as well. I was planning to make my cover 180gsm and my pages 130gsm, but I was told that the cover would have to be 250gsm and the pages would be 150gsm. I was also planning on having my magazine be saddle stitched since most bindings would need a lot more pages to be viable, but I would have to have 20 pages to be able to do that. I felt like the magazine could use more adverts regardless, so I'm planning to just add two more pages

I'm not super happy with my articles, I feel like some are better than others (I don't like how I list the activities in the travel article but I'm fine with the articles on the Oscars and the beauty products) but I'm not sure how to write it how I want it to be like. I tried my best and I'm overall fine with the quality of the articles though, I'm aware that I'll always be much more judgmental and harsh on my own work than anyone else

I was originally planning to get a focus group to get feedback from during the production stage, but I've decided to move that to post-production feedback. I already have two magazine designers who agreed to give me feedback during production and after reflecting on it, I feel like audience feedback is best for either the start of pre-production or post-production since I'm only focusing on magazine design during production. I regret not getting audience feedback during research as I'd have been able to better judge what my audience would want from the magazine (article topics) before actually writing the articles
